Retirement
When I read Between Two Kingdoms, Sulekia narrates that when she was admitted to the hospital guard for cancer treatment, she brought in her major treaties of English literature. Suleika did not go through any of them; she ended up reading books describing people's lives through deleterious illnesses. It was something she was able to connect with.
I did not read but listened to Abby Wambach's memoir. She retired from soccer at age 35. I like her memoir because it describes a lot of what when through here emotionally rather than explaining the intricacies of how to become a better soccer player.
Listening to Abby was the right thing to do at this moment. I have officially notified the relevant people that I will be stepping down as director of REPU within a year from now. It took me almost two months to know what to put down in that email. Not what I had thought I would share came out in the simple, few paragraphs emails I sent.
It hurts; I am allowing myself to feel retirement; I did not know I could even feel it at age 30. It is a new experience.
