Gatekeeping vs. in the service of

Sometimes I find myself with an opinion.

It is an opinion that could change somebody's life.

For many external and internal occurrences and events I ended up with this privilege.

The opportunity feels like being at the entrance of a gate. Once a year we put a big billboard asking people to come our way. Once they come close I can think of two behaviors to display. I could look at them and tell them not you. On the other hand, as they walk by I could ask how can I help you? and then listen intently.

The first behavior is gatekeeping, with the mindset of letting people pass or not in benefit of what is behind the gates rather than in people's benefit passing by.

The second behavior is in the service of the people, by listening intently I could make a better decision of this is not for you or yes, this one is for you! Also I could pay attention to them telling me thank you, this is not for me. Evenmore, I could take a step further and keep asking them how can I help you? I know this opportunity is not for you now, but what else I could do for you?

Being on the admission side is a privilege. Not a job that landed on my shoulders, from which I should proclaim sovereignty. Being on this side of the fence I want to be of service to the people seeking opportunities.
