Choosing an undergraduate department
Recently, I sat next to two good friends who shared an interesting dilemma: their niece was texting them, seeking advice on whether to choose computer science or electrical engineering as her major.
While I initially didn't offer any advice, I've since pondered the question. What factors should be considered if one were to face such a decision?
The Pace of Evolution
It's not just about the name of the program. It's essential to grasp how rapidly each department is advancing.
Faculty: Look at the composition of the faculty. Do they have younger members? And more importantly, are these faculty members working on globally relevant topics, or are they entrenched in dated studies? The reputation of a department, often built on past achievements, may not always reflect its current state.
Curriculum: Does the department's curriculum address contemporary issues, especially in the advanced years? It's crucial for an institution to be adaptive and continually strive for educational improvement.
Post-Graduation Paths
Consider where the graduates end up:
- Do they diversify into various industries?
- How many pursue further studies at different universities?
Comparative Growth & Leadership
Among computer science and electrical engineering, which department sees more growth based on academic credentials? Additionally, gauge which one is a front-runner among similar departments nationwide.
